New range of headlights from Philips
40 % more light
Apart from standard car lamps manufacturers also offer Premium quality car bulbs. They provide 30 % more light. The latest generation of Philips car bulbs provided even 40 % more light in a recent mot-Test.
Further, brighter, whiter – the trend towards car headlights with increased levels of lighting continues unabated. At the recent trade fair Automechanika, Philips came up with a « Vision Plus » version of H4 and H7 lamp types and spoke of an increase in light of « up to 50 % ».
Mot has put his statement to the test in the Hella testing facilities. The result was particularly impressive for the H4 Vision Plus. Some 40 % more low-beam light on a Golf as compared to standard lamps. High-beam light was up 20 %.
Certain spots that are of particular importance to the driver are even up 50 %, such as the spot 75 meters in front of the car on the right side of the road. However, these percentages may vary with the type of headlight in use.
The increase was less remarkable with the H7 Vision Plus lamp. The technicians measured a gain of some 10 %. The reason may lie in the fact that technically speaking H7 lamps are Premium lamps anyway. As such they bring a gain of up to 30 % . H4 Vision Plus lamps are also up 10 % as compared to the headlighting system that was being used. Gains are most obvious 75 metres in front of the car. This particular spot receives the major part of the increase in the level of lighting and consequently is brighter by 20 to 30 %.
Before long, standard H4 lamps will be available only in Premium quality. Philips has published a statement announcing that « Philips Premium » will replace all standard lamps in the aftermarket. Other manufacturers may soon follow suit. « Osram Super » and « General Electric Mega Light », all premium quality lamps, might soon take the place of standard models.
All lamps mentionned are of course homologated. The gains do not spring from any illegal increase in electric parameters or any other such manipulation irrespective of binding reglementations. With its « Plus » lamps, Philips has taken on the role of the pioneer. Osram is currently developping a corresponding product. It may be available in early 2001. The « Vision Plus » already is. Two « Vision Plus » H4 lamps cost 39 DM, and two H7 lamps 65 DM (phone 0241/5390).
However, not only headlight bulbs are changing. Designers have found their favorite subject in the yellow indicator lamps. They are expected to beam yellow light, but not appear yellow when unlit. The first such bulb, which appears blueish when unlit, was Osram’s « Diadem ». The new « Silver Vision » from Philips is of neutral color. Its light is yellow according to reglementation. When unlit, however, the bulb is colourless. This is achieved through elaborate coating.
Philips’s 21 watt Silver Vision, just like Osram’s Diadem, is authorized wherever a yellow PY 21 W is in use. They cost 40 DM per pack of two.
